RAM by TONYA DROZDOVA
(Random Access Memory) 120x200cm Aluminum 092023
Intro:
The foundation of my work is primarily focused on the creation of a general image that is developed through unconscious research and only after this action, I proceed to create an interpretation of the resulting concept.
I do not want to present my interpretation of the work as the only correct one, depriving others of the possibility of their own personal interpretation. Because I understand that a different interpretation may be more valuable to the other person.
Description:
Reality is a rubik's cube that you try to assemble based on your interpretations of what is happening and the past. But when you try to refer to your experience - the memory itself is also modified at this time by your own influence, just as it was when the moment happened.
Which inevitably generates an ambivalent sense of uncertainty.
On the one hand, you are in complete control of the situation. You always have a tool with which you are able to notice an endless amount of opportunities of different levels, patterns
by which the world works, and together with this, you can understand yourself, others, situations, etc. ten times more deeply and broadly.
On the other hand, because of the numerous influences of cognitive distortions that occur both in a moment and when we replay a situation in our consciousness, we may interpret the situation in the opposite way to what actually happened in reality. In this way, gradually and imperceptibly, destroying relationships with our social circle and ourselves
The ability to bring back equanimity/balance in moments of emotional surges and reduce the impact of cognitive distortions leads to calmness in uncertainty in general. You begin to realize that you can always deconstruct any moment into different layers (feelings, thoughts, impact of all different external factors on you (location, people, time of day, weather, etc.)). You also become able to look at 1 situation from the perspective of various sciences/philosophies/personalities, understand how to reconfigure or reassemble from 0 into a new configuration of perception.
In the painting, I reflected how I personally perceive memory.
Layers of the painting:
Metal
The metal itself is a blank sheet, which was subsequently distorted as if by 2 different materials, 1 of which clearly dominates the other. That became a symbol for me of the psyche, a combination of unconsciousness and consciousness. These are the parts of us that in general form our reality, our interpretation of it. Therefore, all moments from the outside lay on top of these two components.

Dial
The main focus of the painting is on the dial, because every time we try to access our memory, the first question we inevitably ask ourselves is: when?
Type of dial
  • - Intervals. The existence of intervals on the dial is a reference to the perception of life
  • in the form of chapters. When trying to remember something from 5 years ago, we are well aware that in this interval of time our self-determination was radically different (as an example: 2 years you work in 1 sphere, after 3 years you spend on another business, after a couple of years you found a family, etc.) - that's why the intervals themselves have different lengths.
  • Also the intervals are not connected to each other, indicating a visible gap in thinking,
  • finances, etc. between our iterations
  • - Values on the intervals. In addition to all of this, the values on the segments of the
  • dial themselves are also not sequential due to the fact that our replaying of past events is mostly not in chronological sequence, but in order of importance to us in the
current moment or in the order that had a greater emotional impact on us. So when we try to share a memory with another, we may first remember the peaks that are most emotionally intense, and only then we try to remember context of the event itself, so that the overall meaning of the story is kept.
The lack of values expresses the lack of memory of the day/event as a whole.
- Interval forms. Their deformation is so strong because - small noise conveys the
uniqueness of all the factors that have come together in the moment - at the point of interaction with the memory
Media
The presence of different kinds of images are the stored visual and emotional representations in our psyche.
Types of media:
  • - clear image - the moment, what we remember in details (time, environment, our state of mind and other factors)
  • - schematic illustration - a situation that didn't make sense to us/experienced a lack of energy during the event
  • - abstract spots - a direct connection to our feelings, what was forming inside under a strong emotional outburst. That is, the visualization of this moment happens through fantasy, not by the environment around us. For example, someone wrote that they are ready to invest in your business or they have a mutual feeling of sympathy for you. Moments that actually take you by the hand and lead you to a new stage of your life
  • Abstract pattern
  • A trace that distorts the reality of perception that is created based on our emotions, the states in which we live the moment or remember past events.
  • - In moments of stress or apathy, the mind is in affect, everything is cloudy
  • - When you're calm, you see a bigger and clearer picture of what's going on
  • - In a situation where you're excited, then the focus shifts to only certain aspects of the
  • situation, which you emotionally oversaturate and hyperbolize their importance in the consequence
